On the porch - sits an old man,
Staring out - across the flat land,
Wishing he was plowin fields today.
His tractor - over there,
Barley make out - the words John Deere
Cause the sun has almost faded them away.
He says son I've worked - this piece of ground - nearly all my life.
It's where I was raised - to be a man - and raised a family with my wife.
In the fields - by the crack of dawn
Tryin to finish up - for the sun is gone,
I've spent days - prayin to God - for rain.
Plantin cotton - and cussin weeds
Fixin plows - and choppin beans
This farmin life's all - it's suppose to be
And it sure has made an old man - out of me.
So full of his self - in his younger days
There wasn't much - he woundn't do or say
He never noticed - he was slowin down - as years went by.
Said it's been a tough life, - then raised his hand
But I wouldn't trade places - with any man
And I'd do it all again - if I had the time.
He said the kids are grown and I lost my wife just last year,
Don't know how long I'll be around but I plan to be right here.
He said the grass aint always greener on the other side,
You make it what you want, with what you put into life.
In the fields - by the crack of dawn
Tryin to finish up - for the sun is gone,
I've spent days - prayin to God - for rain.
Plantin cotton - and cussin weeds
Fixin plows - and choppin beans
This farmin life's all - it's suppose to be
And it sure has made an old man - out of me.
sure has made an old man,
sure has made an old man, out of me.
